Old houses were built by people who were good at their jobs, on foundations that have had a century to settle. The result is a building where nothing is quite square, quite plumb, or quite level, and the differences are not evenly distributed.
You cannot fix that. You can decide how to work with it.
Find out how bad it is first
The most expensive version of this problem is discovering it after cutting. Before anything else, take the measurements that tell you the shape of the room:
- Both diagonals of the floor plan; equal diagonals mean square corners
- Each wall checked for plumb, top and bottom
- The floor checked for level across the full run, not just near the wall
- Wall length at the floor and at the ceiling, which are often different
Write the numbers on the wall in pencil. You will use them all day, and reading them off the drywall beats remeasuring six times.
The decision that governs everything
There are two ways to build in a crooked room, and they cannot both be used at once.
Square to itself. The new element is built correctly, level and square, and any deviation from the house gets absorbed at the joint. This is right for anything with moving parts or repeating lines: cabinets, doors, drawer banks, tile layouts with a visible grid.
Parallel to the house. The new work follows an existing dominant line even if that line is wrong. This is right when a long visible edge would make the error obvious, such as a shelf running under a sloping ceiling or a trim piece meeting a ceiling that dips.
The mistake is not choosing. Splitting the difference randomly produces work that is neither correct nor aligned, and it shows.
Why square usually wins for built work
The eye is bad at detecting absolute square and very good at detecting inconsistency. Nobody notices a wall that is three quarters of an inch out over ten feet. Everybody notices a row of cabinet doors where the reveal at one end is tight and the reveal at the other end is wide.
Anything with a repeating line gets built square, always. The difference goes into a filler, a scribe, or a piece of trim.
Absorbing the difference
The craft is in where you hide the error.
Scribing is the main technique. A filler strip or end panel cut to the exact wave of the wall makes the gap disappear entirely, and it is not hard: set the piece plumb, run dividers or a compass along the wall with the pencil marking the panel, then cut to the line with a slight back bevel so the front edge closes tight.
Shims handle the floor. Get the run level first, then let the toe kick and base cover what is underneath.
Trim covers what is left. A quarter round or a shoe molding follows a wavy floor and reads as a deliberate line. Caulk closes the last small variation on a painted surface, though it is not a substitute for a fit that is close to begin with.
Tapered cuts handle ceilings. A cabinet crown that follows a sagging ceiling looks correct; the same crown held level with a visible wedge of shadow does not.
Where to put the error
When you have a choice, put the discrepancy:
- At the end of a run rather than the middle
- Against a wall rather than in open space
- Low rather than at eye level
- Behind an appliance or in a corner
And when the error is large enough that hiding it will look worse than showing it, say so before starting. A homeowner told in advance that the left side of the room drops three quarters of an inch will accept the solution. The same person shown the finished result without warning will only see the gap.
The habit
Measure the reality, pick a reference, build to it consistently, and absorb the difference on purpose. That sequence is what separates work that looks intentional in an old house from work that looks like a fight with the building.
