DEWALT built a naming system that solves a real engineering problem and creates a real customer confusion problem at the same time. Once you see how the packs are wired, the whole line makes sense.
20V MAX is the standard cordless line
The 20V MAX system is a five-cell lithium platform. Five cells at roughly 3.6 volts nominal gives you 18 volts nominal, which is the same class other brands label as 18V. The 20 in the name is the peak voltage measured with no load on a fresh pack. Marketing chose the peak, other brands chose the nominal figure, and now people argue about which system has more voltage when both are the same class.
Practically: 20V MAX competes head to head with any other 18-volt class system. Drills, impact drivers, circular saws, reciprocating saws, grinders, nailers, and the rest of the everyday catalog live here.
FLEXVOLT changes shape internally
A FLEXVOLT pack contains fifteen cells. Inside the housing there is a switching mechanism tied to the tool mount. When you slide the pack onto a standard 20V MAX tool, the cells arrange into three parallel strings of five, and the pack presents itself as a normal 20V MAX battery with a large capacity. When you slide it onto a 60V MAX tool, the strings reconfigure in series and the pack delivers the higher voltage that tool needs.
That is the whole trick. The pack physically rearranges its internal wiring based on the mount it is installed on. There is no adapter, no switch to flip, and no user decision to make.
Why the amp-hour rating looks like two numbers
Because energy is conserved, a pack that triples its voltage divides its amp-hour rating. A pack marked 9.0 Ah in 20V MAX mode becomes 3.0 Ah when it runs a 60V MAX tool. Both numbers describe the same stored energy. This is why FLEXVOLT packs carry dual ratings on the label, and why comparing a FLEXVOLT number directly against a standard pack number is misleading.
What runs on what
- Standard 20V MAX packs run 20V MAX tools only.
- FLEXVOLT packs run 20V MAX tools and higher-voltage FLEXVOLT tools.
- Higher-voltage FLEXVOLT tools require a FLEXVOLT pack. A standard 20V MAX pack will not run them.
Some larger tools accept two packs at once to reach even higher output. Those tools have their own requirements printed on the tool.
When a FLEXVOLT pack is the right call
FLEXVOLT packs are excellent on high-draw tools in the 20V MAX line. More cells in parallel means less voltage sag under heavy cutting, so a big circular saw or a grinder benefits noticeably.
They are also the answer if you own or plan to own any of the higher-voltage tools: table saws, larger miter saws, big rotary hammers, and outdoor equipment.
When it is the wrong call
They are heavy. Putting a fifteen-cell pack on a compact drill turns a comfortable tool into a nose-heavy club, and you will feel it within an hour of overhead work. For drills, drivers, lights, and anything you carry, a compact standard pack is the better tool decision even though the FLEXVOLT pack would technically fit.
They are also more expensive. Buying FLEXVOLT for tools that never draw hard is paying for capability you cannot use.
A sensible DEWALT battery lineup
- Two compact standard packs for drills, drivers and lights.
- Two mid-size standard packs for general work.
- One or two FLEXVOLT packs for saws, grinders and any higher-voltage tools.
That combination covers nearly every tool in the catalog without hauling extra weight through the parts of the day that do not need it.
The 12V MAX question
DEWALT also has a separate compact 12-volt class system. It is a different mount and shares nothing with 20V MAX. If you are building around DEWALT, treat that as a separate decision rather than an extension of the main line.
The short version
20V MAX is 18V by another name. FLEXVOLT is a pack that rewires itself for the tool it is attached to, which is why it works in two families. Buy standard packs for the tools you carry and FLEXVOLT for the tools that pull hard.
