Framing on an open deck is a pleasure. You build flat, you nail from a comfortable position, you tip it up and it is a wall. Remodeling rarely offers that. More often it is a basement with seven feet of headroom, a hallway you cannot turn around in, or a closet where the ceiling is already there.

Different constraints, different sequence.

Plates first

In a tight space the sequence inverts. Instead of building a wall and placing it, you place the boundaries and fill in between.

Establish the bottom plate location and snap a line. Then transfer that line to the ceiling using a plumb reference. A laser makes this trivial; a level held against a straight board works fine, and a plumb bob works in the dark and never needs a battery.

Fasten both plates before cutting a single stud. Now the wall has a defined top and bottom that are actually parallel to each other in the sense that matters, which is that they are both where you want them.

Every stud is its own measurement

The critical difference from deck framing: do not cut all your studs to one length.

Floors sag, ceilings dip, and joists deflect. A quarter inch of variation across a room is completely ordinary. Cut sixteen studs to the same number and you get some that need persuading, some that leave a gap, and a wall that bows in the middle.

Measure at each location, mark the stud, cut it. It feels slow and it is faster than fixing a wall that fought you.

Layout that still works

Layout does not change because the space is small. Mark the plates together while they are still accessible, or mark the bottom plate and transfer up.

Hold the standard spacing so drywall lands on framing. In a tight space the temptation is to eyeball around obstacles, which produces a wall that is unpleasant to sheet and worse to hang anything on later. Where an obstacle genuinely forces an irregular bay, note it, and take a photo of the framing before it gets covered.

Mark the crown of each stud and orient them consistently. On a short wall this matters less; on anything that will hold cabinets or tile it matters a lot.

Fastening where you cannot swing

This is the actual problem in tight quarters. A framing hammer needs room, and a framing nailer needs room plus a clear line for the nose.

Toe-nailing works with a shorter swing and a lot of patience. It is the traditional answer and it is still valid.

Structural screws are the practical answer for most remodelers now. Not drywall screws, which are hardened and brittle and fail in shear, but fasteners specifically rated for structural framing connections. They drive in a fraction of the swing space, they hold, and they can be backed out when a stud lands wrong.

A palm nailer is the third option and it is worth owning if you do this often. It drives a full framing nail in almost no space at all.

Where a connection is structural rather than partition framing, follow whatever the fastener schedule and local requirements specify. A non-bearing partition and a wall carrying load are different conversations.

Check plumb continuously

On an open build you check plumb at the end. In place, check every few studs.

An in-place wall accumulates error, because each stud is being fit to whatever is already there. A wall that has drifted an eighth of an inch per stud is not visible until it is twelve feet long and obviously leaning. Two seconds with a level per stud avoids the entire problem.

The small things that help

  • Cut a story pole for repeated dimensions instead of pulling tape each time
  • Pre-drill near the ends of studs in dense or dry lumber
  • Keep a short block on hand as a spacer for consistent bay widths
  • Photograph the framing before insulation and drywall, always

Framing in place will never be as fast as building flat. Done in the right order, it is predictable, and predictable is what actually keeps a remodel on schedule.
