An angle grinder removes metal, mortar, tile, and rust faster than any other handheld tool most people own. The reason it does that is a disc spinning at speeds measured in tens of thousands of surface feet per minute, a few inches from your hands and directly in line with your face.

That is not a reason to avoid the tool. It is a reason to develop specific habits and never negotiate with them.

The guard is not optional

The guard exists to contain fragments if a wheel comes apart and to direct sparks and debris away from the operator. Removing it is common and indefensible.

Position matters as much as presence. Rotate the guard so it sits between the wheel and your body for the cut you are making. If a task seems to require removing the guard, the task needs a different tool or a different setup.

Matching the wheel to the job

Wheels are not interchangeable, and the differences are not cosmetic.

  • Grinding wheels are thick and designed for pressure applied to the face at an angle. They are not made for cutting.
  • Cut-off wheels are thin and designed for edge loading only. Any side pressure can shatter them.
  • Flap discs blend grinding and finishing and are gentler on thin material.
  • Wire wheels and cups remove rust and coatings, and throw wire strands, which is why full face protection matters.
  • Diamond blades are for masonry, tile, and concrete, often with wet or dust-controlled methods.

Every wheel is marked with a maximum rated speed. That number must be at or above the grinder's no-load speed. Check it every time you mount a new wheel.

Inspect wheels before mounting. A wheel that has been dropped can have an invisible crack. Ring-test bonded wheels where the manufacturer specifies it, and discard anything chipped, cracked, or out of round.

Kickback and where to stand

Kickback happens when the wheel binds or catches an edge and the tool jumps in the opposite direction of rotation. It is fast and strong.

Reduce it by:

  • Clamping the workpiece so it cannot shift or pinch the wheel
  • Supporting both sides of a cut so the kerf does not close
  • Keeping the wheel out of corners and away from sharp edges when possible
  • Using both hands with the side handle installed
  • Letting the tool reach full speed before contact, and easing into the cut

And stand out of the plane of the wheel. If the disc comes apart, the fragments travel along that plane. A step to the side costs nothing.

Protection that actually matters here

This is the tool where a face shield over safety glasses is the correct answer, not an overreaction. Sparks and fragments come off at high speed and in quantity.

Add hearing protection, gloves appropriate to the work, and clothing that will not catch sparks. Avoid loose sleeves and anything synthetic that melts. Keep a fire watch in mind: grinding sparks travel much farther than people expect and can smolder in sawdust, insulation, or dry grass for a long time before anything shows.

Habits that compound

Unplug or remove the battery before changing wheels. Let the wheel stop on its own rather than setting a coasting tool down. Never set a grinder down until the wheel has stopped; it will walk across a bench or a floor. Keep the cord or the pack out of the cutting path.

Check the guard, the side handle, and the wheel condition before each use. It takes ten seconds.

When to use something else

A grinder is not always the right tool just because it will get through the material. For cutting rebar in place, a band saw or a reciprocating saw is often safer. For tile, a wet saw gives cleaner results with less dust. For paint removal, chemical or heat methods may avoid creating hazardous dust, particularly in older buildings where lead paint is a real possibility.

Reach for a grinder deliberately, set it up properly, and it earns its place. Reach for it casually and it will find the mistake.
