Backs get the attention. Knees get the sympathy. Hands go quietly, and by the time somebody mentions it, they have usually been dropping things for two years.
What repeated vibration does
Tools that vibrate transmit energy into the hand and arm. Over years, that exposure can damage small blood vessels and nerves. The recognized name for the result is hand-arm vibration syndrome, and occupational health agencies track it because it is common in trades that use grinders, hammer drills, rotary hammers, saws, and impact tools.
The progression is gradual, which is the problem. It starts as tingling after a long day that goes away by morning. Then numbness that lingers. Then fingers that blanch white in the cold and take a while to come back. Eventually reduced grip strength and fine motor control, which is the part that ends careers, because the work requires both.
Some of that is reversible if exposure drops early. Some of it is not.
Grip is a separate problem
Even without vibration, constant forceful gripping takes a toll. Tendons in the forearm get irritated, the nerve passing through the wrist gets crowded, and you end up with pain that has nothing to do with the hand itself.
The most common avoidable cause is gripping much harder than the task requires. Nearly everybody does it, especially with a tool that is heavy, a tool they do not trust, or a tool that is dull and needs to be forced. Grip pressure is largely a habit, and habits can be adjusted once you notice them.
A dull blade is an ergonomic problem, not just a cutting problem. Sharp tools require less force from the hand holding them.
What actually helps
In rough order of effect:
Pick tools with lower vibration ratings for the work you do most. Manufacturers publish vibration figures, and the difference between models is not trivial. For rotary hammers and grinders in particular it is worth comparing.
Break up continuous exposure. Twenty minutes of grinding, then something else, then back. Total daily exposure is what drives risk, and continuous blocks are worse than the same time spread out.
Keep hands warm. Cold reduces circulation and makes vibration damage worse, which is why symptoms show up first in winter. Warm gloves for cold weather are a health measure, not a comfort measure.
Loosen the grip. Hold the tool firmly enough to control it and no more. Let the tool weight and the cutting edge do the work.
Use both hands and auxiliary handles when the tool has them. Spreading the load matters.
Anti-vibration gloves can help at some frequencies. They are a supplement to the items above, not a replacement, and a glove that forces a tighter grip because it is bulky can be a net loss.
Getting older changes the math
Recovery slows. A day of grinding that you shook off at twenty-five takes three days to clear at fifty. Circulation is generally worse. Any arthritis in the joints amplifies everything.
That does not mean stopping. It means being more deliberate about which tasks you take on continuously, being more willing to hand the all-day grinding to somebody else, and paying more attention to the early signals rather than treating them as background noise.
Do not wait it out
The signals worth acting on:
- Numbness or tingling that persists after work ends
- Waking at night with a numb hand
- Fingers turning white in cold and being slow to recover
- Dropping small objects or losing fine control
- Weakness that is new
Any of those warrant a medical evaluation. The reason to go early is straightforward: some of the nerve and vascular damage becomes permanent, and the point of catching it early is to stop that.
Hands are the whole trade. A back injury can be worked around with help and better lifting. Losing the ability to feel a fastener seat or hold a tool steady is a different category of loss, and it is largely preventable with habits that cost almost nothing to adopt.
