From late October to March, the useful daylight on a job shrinks at both ends. Work starts in the dark and ends in it. Most crews respond by buying one very bright light and pointing it at whatever they are doing, which solves less than it seems to.
Why one bright light fails
The eye adapts to the brightest thing in view. Put a high output light in a room and everything outside its beam gets relatively darker, not because there is less light there, but because your eyes have adjusted to the bright spot.
Worse, if the source is unshielded and in your field of view, you get glare. Glare actively reduces what you can see. Anybody who has tried to work while a coworker's light is pointed at their face knows this without needing the physics.
The fix is distribution. Three moderate lights around the work area produce far better visibility than one very bright one in a corner, and they eliminate the hard shadows that hide hazards.
Placement rules
- Light from more than one direction so the work is not in its own shadow
- Keep sources above eye level or below the work line, not directly in view
- Bounce off a ceiling or a wall when you can; it kills harsh shadows
- Light the path, not just the workspace, since most trips happen in transit
- Move the light when you move, rather than working in your own shadow for an hour
That last one sounds obvious and gets ignored constantly. If your body is between the light and the work, you are working blind and correcting by feel.
Task light is separate
General area light lets you move safely. It is not enough for detailed work.
Anything involving a fine line, a small fastener, a wire, or a finish needs light close to the task. A headlamp is the cheapest solution and it goes exactly where you are looking. A small clamp light on a stud near the work does the same job without the weight.
Safety standards for construction specify higher illumination for areas where detailed work happens than for general storage or circulation, which reflects the same idea.
Raking light for finishes
The technique worth knowing: for checking drywall, paint, plaster, or any flat finish, put a light almost parallel to the surface.
Overhead light hides surface flaws by illuminating them evenly. Raking light throws long shadows off every ridge, dip, sanding scratch, and fastener depression. It shows you exactly what the customer will see on a sunny afternoon when the sun comes through a window at a low angle.
Doing this before you call a wall finished is the difference between a callback and none.
Color and glare quality
Cheap lights often have poor color rendering, which makes it hard to judge finish color, wire color, and stain matching. For anything where color decisions are being made, that matters.
Diffused light is easier to work under for hours than a bare intense point source. Fatigue from squinting is real, and it accumulates over a winter.
Cold and batteries
Battery-powered lights are the norm now, and cold weather reduces available runtime the same way it does with any lithium pack.
Plan for more packs in winter than you would use in July, keep spares somewhere warm, and consider corded lights for the fixed area lighting so the packs go toward tools. A corded light and a cordless task light is a good split.
The safety part
The reason this is not just about quality: most winter jobsite falls, trips, and struck-by incidents happen in poor light, and the hazard is usually something that would have been obvious in daylight. Extension cords, offcuts, tool cases, a hole in a subfloor.
Lighting the path and the general area is not a nicety. It is the cheapest hazard control available, and it takes about four minutes to set up properly.
Short days are going to happen every year. The crews that handle them well are the ones that set the lights up first, before the work starts, rather than adding light after it gets hard to see.
