A framing square is useful for marking a cut. It is close to useless for squaring anything larger than itself, because a small square amplifies its own error across a long run. Two-foot tolerance becomes eight-foot error.

The good news is that squaring a rectangle needs no square at all. It needs a tape and a little arithmetic that geometry did for you a long time ago.

The diagonal method

For any four-sided frame, if opposite sides are equal in length and both diagonals are equal, the frame is a rectangle. Every corner is 90 degrees. There is no way around it.

The process:

  1. Confirm opposite sides match. Cut parts in pairs so this is already true.
  2. Assemble loosely, with fasteners started but not tight.
  3. Measure corner to corner one way, then the other way.
  4. If one diagonal is longer, push in on the corner at the end of that longer diagonal.
  5. Re-measure and repeat until the two numbers match.

Corner-to-corner means the same physical point on each corner. Inside to inside, or outside to outside, consistently. Mixing the two produces numbers that never converge and a frustrating afternoon.

On a bigger frame, a tape can sag or wander. A string with a mark, or a stick cut to the first diagonal and then checked against the second, removes the sag entirely.

When there is nothing to measure across

Laying out a square corner on the ground, for a deck or a shed pad, there is no frame yet. That is where 3-4-5 comes in.

From the corner, measure 3 feet along one line and mark it. Measure 4 feet along the other line and mark it. Adjust the second line until the distance between the two marks reads exactly 5 feet. The corner is now 90 degrees.

Use the biggest multiple your space allows. 6-8-10 is more accurate than 3-4-5. 12-16-20 is better still. The error in your mark stays constant while the leg length grows, so the angular error shrinks.

Keeping it square

A square frame is a temporary condition. It goes out the moment you start driving fasteners, because a fastener pulls two pieces together and drags the geometry with it.

Habits that help:

  • Tack, check, then finish. Two fasteners per corner, check the diagonals, then drive the rest.
  • Fasten in a pattern that opposes itself, working across the frame rather than around it in one direction.
  • Get something rigid on the frame fast. A single diagonal brace screwed across the back holds it. A square piece of plywood on one corner holds it better, because a sheet good cut on a table saw is already square.
  • Work on a flat surface. A frame twisted out of plane can have equal diagonals and still be wrong.

Checking without a tape

Sighting down a frame catches gross error. Sitting a known-square object, like a factory-cut sheet corner, into the frame's corner catches medium error. Neither replaces the diagonals.

The diagonals are the only check that measures the whole frame at once, and they cost about fifteen seconds. Skipping them is how a cabinet ends up with a door that touches on one side and gaps on the other, discovered at the very end when nothing can be moved.
