How can I tell if a battery is unsafe?

Stop using a battery that is swollen, cracked, punctured, leaking, unusually hot, hissing, smoking, smells abnormal, has damaged terminals, or repeatedly faults. Move away from it safely, keep it from combustibles if this can be done without risk, and follow manufacturer or local hazardous-waste guidance. Do not ship a damaged battery.
