A cordless battery is the most expensive consumable most tool owners buy. It is also the component people treat worst, mostly by leaving it somewhere hot.

Heat does more damage than work does

Lithium cells degrade faster at high temperatures, and the effect compounds over time. A pack that spends summer in a closed truck bed is aging on days it is never used at all.

The three heat situations worth changing:

  • Charging hot packs. Let a battery cool after heavy cutting or driving before it goes on the charger. Good chargers wait for you, which is why a hot pack sometimes appears to sit and do nothing.
  • Storing in vehicles. A closed cab in direct sun reaches temperatures well beyond anything the pack sees in use. Bring packs inside.
  • Charging in enclosed spaces. A charger buried in a tote with no airflow makes its own oven.

None of this requires equipment. It requires putting packs somewhere shaded and giving chargers air.

Stop running packs completely flat

Older battery chemistries rewarded full discharge cycles. Lithium does not. The cells sit at their most stressed state when nearly empty, and repeatedly taking them there shortens usable life.

The practical habit is to swap packs when the tool starts noticeably slowing rather than pushing until the protection circuit shuts everything down. The protection circuit exists to prevent damage in an emergency, not as a daily routine.

Storage charge level

For a pack going into storage for a season, a partial charge is the target. Full charge and empty charge are both harder on cells during long idle periods. Manufacturers generally suggest storing partially charged and checking periodically.

Set a reminder for every couple of months. A pack that self-discharges to zero and sits there can end up unable to accept a charge at all, and no charger will bring back a cell group that has collapsed.

Keep the contacts clean and the pack dry

A surprising number of "dead" batteries are dirty ones. Sawdust, drywall dust, and metal filings pack into the rails and contacts, and the tool reads a poor connection as a fault.

  • Blow out the terminals with low-pressure air or brush them with a dry brush.
  • Never put a wet pack on a charger. Dry it fully first.
  • Do not use solvents on contacts or open a pack to clean inside it.
  • Retire any pack with a cracked housing, swelling, or a burnt smell, and dispose of it through a battery recycling program rather than household trash.

Damaged lithium packs are a genuine fire risk. If a pack is swollen, has been crushed, or has been in a fire or deep water, stop using it and get it to a proper recycling drop-off.

What does not matter much

A few habits get repeated that make little practical difference on modern packs. Charging a pack that is only half used is fine. Leaving a pack on a modern charger for a few hours after it finishes is fine. Mixing pack capacities across tools on the same platform is fine, within the tool's stated minimum requirement.

Spend the attention on temperature instead. It is the variable that actually moves pack life.

A short routine that works

At the end of a working day: pull packs out of tools, wipe or blow off the contacts, leave hot ones out to cool before docking, and charge what you need for tomorrow indoors. At the end of a season: bring everything inside, leave packs partially charged, and check them a couple of times over the off months.

That is the whole routine. It costs a few minutes a week and is the difference between replacing packs every couple of years and getting a lot more out of them.
