Lighting is the part of a jobsite people fix last and complain about first. The usual response is to buy the brightest light available, point it at the work, and then squint through the glare for the rest of the day.
Glare is the actual enemy
Your eyes adjust to the brightest thing in view. If that is the light source itself, everything else looks darker by comparison. A powerful bare LED sitting in your field of view makes the corner you are working in harder to see, not easier.
The fix costs nothing. Get the light source out of your line of sight: above and behind you, bounced off a ceiling or wall, or aimed at the work from an angle rather than from beside your head. A modest light placed well beats an intense light placed badly, every time.
Beam pattern by task
Three broad categories, each with a job.
Area lights. Wide, diffuse output meant to fill a room. Stand-mounted or tripod-mounted, usually the highest output in the lineup. These are for demolition, framing, painting a room, working after dark.
Task and inspection lights. Slim, often magnetic, sometimes pivoting. Meant to light a small area from close range without blinding you. These are what you want inside a panel, under a sink, behind a dryer, or in a wall cavity.
Spot and handheld lights. Focused beams for finding something at distance: down a crawlspace, up in rafters, along a run of duct.
Most people need at least one area light and one small task light. Buying two area lights and no task light is the common mistake.
Color rendering
Cheap LEDs often produce light that makes everything look flat and slightly wrong. That is a color rendering issue, and it matters more than people expect.
It affects whether a stain looks right, whether a patch blends, whether two whites match, and whether you can tell a red wire from an orange one. If a light will be used for finish work, look for a stated high color rendering figure rather than just a lumen count.
Color temperature is separate: cooler light looks brighter and more clinical, warmer light is easier on the eyes over long periods. Personal preference, mostly, but very cool light in a small space can be fatiguing.
Mounting is a feature
The best light is the one that stays where you put it while both your hands are busy. Look for:
- Strong magnets, ideally more than one, and on more than one face
- A hook that fits over a joist, a stud, or a rung
- A pivoting head so the body can sit flat while the light aims elsewhere
- A base that does not tip when the cord is nudged
- A tripod or stand mount for area lights
A light with a great output and no way to secure it becomes a light somebody holds, which means one fewer working hand.
Power source
Cordless lights run on the same platform packs as your tools, which is convenient and also means a light left on all afternoon has eaten a battery you needed. Many cordless lights accept a cord or a USB source as an alternative, which is worth looking for.
For area lighting that runs all day, corded is the sane choice. Save the battery-powered lights for mobility.
Durability details that matter
Work lights get knocked over and rained on. A polycarbonate lens survives what glass does not. A stated ingress protection rating tells you how it handles dust and water. A recessed or guarded lens survives being set face-down on gravel.
Heat also matters: high-output LEDs get hot, and a light with poor heat management dims over time or fails early. A metal body or visible heat sinking on a high-output light is a good sign.
Practical setup
For most work, two lights beats one. Put an area light high and behind you to fill the space, and keep a small magnetic light in a pouch for the specific hole you are looking into. That arrangement removes shadows without putting a bright source in your eyes, and it is the difference between working comfortably and working around a light.
