Nailer choice is really a question about the shape of your work. Somebody framing a house all week and somebody hanging trim in one room have different problems, and each power source solves one of them well.

Pneumatic

Air-powered nailers are the oldest arrangement and still the standard on production sites.

Strong points. The tool itself is light, because the motor is elsewhere. Cycle speed is fast. The tools are the cheapest to buy and cost almost nothing to run beyond fasteners and electricity. They are mechanically simple and last a very long time.

Weak points. You need a compressor, a hose, and a place to plug in. Setup and teardown eat real time. Hoses catch on things, drag across finished floors, and become a trip hazard. On a small job, the compressor takes longer to set up than the nailing takes.

Best for: framing, sheathing, roofing, flooring, anything where you set up once and work all day, and any job with more than one nailer running.

Gas

Gas nailers combine a small battery for ignition with a disposable fuel cell that drives the piston.

Strong points. No hose and no compressor, with driving power close to pneumatic. Popular in framing crews for exactly that reason. Lighter than most full-size cordless framing nailers.

Weak points. Fuel cells are an ongoing cost and have to be stocked and stored. The tools need more regular cleaning than pneumatic ones, because combustion leaves residue. Cold weather affects fuel performance. There are exhaust products, which matters in enclosed spaces.

Best for: framing and structural work where mobility matters and you are willing to buy consumables.

Battery

Cordless nailers drive fasteners mechanically, using a flywheel, a spring, or a compressed gas spring, powered by the platform battery.

Strong points. Pick it up and use it. No hose, no fuel, no setup. For punch lists, trim, small repairs, fencing, and anything scattered across a site, the time saved is real. Trim nailers in particular have become genuinely good.

Weak points. Heavier at the nose, which matters overhead and on long trim runs. More expensive up front. Some designs have a short spin-up delay before the first shot. Framing models are bulky.

Best for: trim, punch lists, remodel work, fencing, and anyone who nails in bursts rather than continuously.

Fastener type matters more than people expect

Whatever the power source, match the nailer to the fastener the job requires. Framing nailers come in full round head and clipped head, and local code or inspector preference can dictate which is acceptable for structural work. Roofing, flooring, siding, and finish work each have their own tools and fastener sizes. Check the code requirements for structural connections before buying based on price.

Safety, which is not optional with these tools

Nail guns cause a large number of construction injuries every year, and most of them share a few causes: contact firing with the trigger held, double fires, nails passing through the workpiece, and awkward positions.

Practical rules:

  • Use sequential trigger mode for anything other than open production framing.
  • Never carry a tool with your finger on the trigger.
  • Never disable the contact safety tip.
  • Disconnect air or remove the battery before clearing a jam or servicing the tool.
  • Keep your free hand well away from the fastener path, and remember nails can deflect through material at an angle.
  • Wear eye protection and hearing protection.
  • Do not use a nailer on a ladder unless you have solid footing and a free hand for the ladder.

Seek medical attention for any puncture wound from a nailer, even one that looks small. These injuries can be deeper and dirtier than they appear.

The practical answer for most people

If you own one nailer and do mixed work, a cordless finish or brad nailer earns its keep constantly. If you frame, pneumatic remains the value choice as long as you accept the compressor. Gas sits in the middle and makes the most sense for framing crews who move a lot.
