An oscillating multi-tool cuts by vibrating a blade through a small arc, very fast. That mechanism is inefficient for long cuts and unmatched for cuts that start in the middle of something already installed.

Nobody buys one as their first tool. Almost everybody who owns one reaches for it in situations where the alternative was demolition.

What it is genuinely best at

Undercutting door jambs and casing so flooring slides underneath instead of being scribed around. A flush-cut blade laid flat on a spacer does this in about a minute per jamb.

Plunge cuts in finished surfaces. Cutting an opening in drywall for a box, a vent, or an access panel, without a starting hole and without cutting past the line.

Cutting things in place. A pipe stub in a wall cavity, a nail between two boards, a screw behind a cabinet, a bolt with no clearance for a grinder.

Grout, caulk, and adhesive removal. With a carbide grout blade or a scraper blade, work that would otherwise be done by hand for hours.

Trimming and fitting. Shaving a fraction off a piece already installed, where taking it back to a saw is not practical.

Where it is the wrong choice

Any straight cut through open material. A jigsaw, circular saw, or handsaw will be several times faster and leave a cleaner edge. Multi-tools are slow, and they generate a lot of heat and dust in exchange for that slowness.

Long demolition cuts also belong to a reciprocating saw. Using a multi-tool for the work a recip saw does is a good way to burn through blades and patience.

Blades decide almost everything

The tool matters less than most buyers expect. Blade quality, tooth pattern, and material match are what change the experience.

  • Bi-metal blades for general wood, plastic, and light metal. Good all-purpose choice.
  • Carbide-tipped blades for nail-embedded wood, hardwood, and cement board. Expensive and worth it when the alternative is destroying three bi-metal blades.
  • Diamond and carbide grit blades for grout, tile, and masonry.
  • Scraper blades, rigid or flexible, for adhesive, caulk, and paint.
  • Segment and flush-cut blades for cutting up against a surface.

Buy the cheap bulk assortment for drywall and softwood, where you will consume blades regardless. Buy quality for anything with metal in it.

Technique that saves blades

Let the tool oscillate at speed and apply light, steady pressure. Pushing harder does not cut faster; it heats the blade, dulls the teeth, and can blue the steel. If progress stops, the blade is dull or wrong for the material.

Move the blade slightly side to side in a long cut to spread wear across the teeth rather than wearing one section flat.

Start plunge cuts at an angle and rotate to vertical as the blade enters, which gives you more control over where the cut begins.

Set the speed lower for plastics and metal, higher for wood. Too high in plastic melts the material back into the cut.

Safety and dust

Blades get very hot, and people grab them right after a cut. Let them cool or use pliers to change them.

Before plunging into any wall, know what is behind it. Electrical, plumbing, and gas lines live in wall cavities, and a multi-tool blade will find them. Kill the circuit, check with a scanner, and cut shallow first.

Wear eye protection: this tool throws fine debris straight back at you. For grout, tile, and cement board, respirable silica is a genuine hazard, so use dust extraction, wet methods, or a proper respirator rather than working in the cloud.

Buying one

Look for tool-free blade changes, variable speed, and a common blade interface. Beyond that, cordless versus corded is the real decision, and cordless is usually right because this tool gets used in short bursts, often somewhere awkward.

It will not be the tool you use most. It will be the tool that saves a job several times a year.
